Richard Evans (RichardEvansPhoto.com)
is the fastest growing name in the Commercial Swimsuit
Photogaphy Industry today.
His career started in 1981 at Gulf Coast
Community College on Panama City Beach in Florida Majoring
in Art. Due to the Recession during Jimmy Carter's Administration,
times were tough to say the least for everyone, but especially
for a new kid fresh out of school. Photography had now
been put on the back burner for a few years.
In the late 1980's Richard ventured out
on his own following a dream to explore Australia. With
only a backpack, camera bag and tripod, Richard's dream
was soon to come true. After landing from a 24 1/2 flight,
Richard soon learned what the word "jet lagged"
meant. He soon checked into a Hotel and realized quickly
sleeping was out of the question. Richard spent the next
2 days covering every inch of Sydney. During the day he
spent most of his time getting aquainted with the locals
and photographing the city including Sydney's famous "Opera
House", the "Prison" on a nearby Island
where the first English Settlers came from and also the
downtown area where he had his first taste of people driving
on the wrong side of the road. As nightime fell, still
jet lagged not being able to sleep, Richard and his camera
were out on the town. After midnight, the only place that
was still alive was the "Red Light" district.
Wearing an American flag t-shirt and red, white and blue
jogging pants, Richard was approached by every "prositute"
in Sydney. After explaining to them in a nice way that
he did not "do prositutes" but would like to
take their picture, most agreed.
Finally, after a little sleep, he was off
to "The Great Barrier Reef" where he began a
week of diving and underwater photography. After the dive
trip, Richard spent another week in the "Tablelands"
whitewater rafting and shooting some of the most incredible
Waterfalls on earth.
His last week was spent back in Sydney
on the famous "Bondi Beach" where he met and
Photographed many beautiful Australian girls. After returning
back to the U.S., Richard realized that as beautiful and
diverse that Australia is, he enjoyed shooting the girls
outdoors on Bondi Beach the most and this is where it
all began.
Soon after Richard's return from Australia,
his Waterfall picture's were showcased at a local Art
Gallery. While attending an Art Show in his honor, the
Gallery owners daughter, Jaca, began to show alot of personal
interest in Richard and soon they began a relationship.
Jaca had always dreamed about becoming a model, she was
a tall toehead blonde with ice blue eyes, very beautiful
and very thin. One day she showed him a Swimsuit Magazine
called SWIMWEAR ILLUSTRATED wich is owned and Published
by Bob Anderson of "Ujena Swimwear". They were
having a Model Search for New Faces and the winner would
get an expense paid trip to California to become a Eujena
Model.Richard was hesitate about sending in Jaca's pictures
because she was so thin and had no curves, but immediately
began recruiting girls to submit. Richard submitted 3
models that were all excepted and immediately Eujena hired
him as a Contributing Photographer for Eujena's Catalog.Swimwear
Illustrated Magazine soon after had a power struggle within
the company and the Director of Photography pulled out
and started a Magazine called SWIMSUIT ILLUSTRATED, a
confusingly similar name. The Magazine was financed by
Bob McDonald and Sonny Bono, yes Sonny Bono of Sonny and
Cher. Now Chuck Nugumbaugher and Roy Hahn set out to be
direct competiton with Bob Anderson and Eujena. They took
names and phone numbers of Models and Photographers with
them. They also brought in Stan Lipton which was the Producer
of the Morton Downy Show in New York. Needless to say,
Stan had all the connections in New York with all the
Television Media. Swimsuit Illustrated soon began Promotions
in Cancun, Mexico, Jamaica and the Bahamas using Richard
as their Official Photographer. With Stan's connections
in New York, INSIDE EDITION was invited to go along to
film for World-wide Television and this was Richard's
first big Television exposure. After about 2 years Chuck
and Roy had a serious falling out and Roy started a New
Magazine called PRIVATE PIER. Private Pier was a magazine
dedicated to Ecology and saving the Reef along with showcasing
features on beautiful Swimsuit Models and Swimwear lines,
so again Richard was brought in as the Official Photographer
for the Magazine.During the next 5 years, Richard worked
with Private Pier on several big media promotions in the
Bahamas, West Palm Beach and Las Vegas. During this time
Richard worked closey with Scott Pearson (world renown
underwater Photographer) Christian Lassen (world renown
artist) with Gallerys in Beverly Hills, Hawaii, Las Vegas
