Check
out our exclusive interview with movie director Patrick
Pizarro. This young and rising star with a promising career,
is one to keep your eyes on! For now dive into his new
movie: g2, which he wrote and will soon direct.
Set
primarily in Miami, among the city's Cuban-American community,
"g2" is the story of a Cuban government agent
on a mission to infiltrate a Miami-based Cuban exile group.
Elements of action, romance, and intrigue aside, the story
is really about relationships; father and son, man and
woman, and that between friends. The story also delves
into the issues surrounding the choices we make: should
we follow the dictates of our chosen lives, or those of
our hearts?

OUR INTERVIEW WITH PATRICK PIZARRO ::.
Q
- First off, what's G2 the movie about?
A - g2,
in a nutshell, is a about a Cuban government agent who's
sent on a mission to Miami. He's sent over to infiltrate
a local Cuban-American group and keep tabs on the new
head of that group. During the course of his assignment
however, he inadvertently develops a father/son relationship
with this man. This, of course, ends up complicating things
for him.
Q - What was
your inspiration for the film?
A - My
inspiration for the film comes from a couple of different
things. When I got out of film school, I was in "now
what" mode for a little while before I began to take
an interest in my roots, Cuban heritage, etc. (It's not
uncommon for a first timer to take on a project that to
some degree is close to he/she. Something they have a
familiarity with.) I had remembered one of my assignments
from my Intro. to Screenwriting class where I wrote about
an assassin who got to know his target and later saved
his life. I took the gist of that and wrote "g2"
from it.
Q
- What is the message that you are trying
to send with this film?
A - The
message(s) I hope g2 sends it's audience: There are various
I think, but I"ll try to pinpoint some: Prejudgement,
or making up your mind about something before getting
a chance to know it. Perceptions, how people perceive
things and the forces that mold, shape, or change them.
Obligations, and how some people feel the need to pursue
things even when they've lost faith in them.
Q - How is the
project coming along?
A - The
project is coming along well. We're currently in pre-production
and securing our financing. The crew we've rounded up
thus far is top notch and we've made important contacts
with local production professionals and services. Casting
is going really well as far as allowing us to combine
established name talent with highly talented newcomers.
More on that later.
Q - When do
you expect the film to be released?
A - As
far as a release goes, our plan is to take it out to the
film festivals next year. Whichever distributor takes
on the film I imagine will schedule it's release shortly
thereafter.
Q - How can
we find out even more about this film and its progress?
A - You
can always check out our website at www.g2themovie.com.
We'll be doing updates practically every other week/every
week as the pace picks up. There's also contact info at
the site where you can e-mail us.
Q - If you were
offered the opportunity to live your life as another film
person (actor, director, etc.) who would it be and why?
A - OOH.
There's a lot here. Orson Welles (without the excess)
because I would've loved to have a fraction of that genius.
Walt Disney, because his achievements run the gamut: from
animation, motion pictures, and television all the way
to theme parks. And I'll throw in George Lucas too. Much
like Disney, he's been able to make a huge impact on our
culture and our lives. And he also gave us Princess Leia's
twin bun hairstyle.
Q - If you
could work with any person in the film industry, past
or present, actor, director or writer, who would it be
and why?
A - I
would love to work with Harrison Ford. Working with Han
Solo? Could you imagine that?! You know you've made it
when you can say that.
Q - You've been
hired to remake "Casablanca" who do you cast
in the leads?
A - If
hired to remake Casablanca... Hypothetically speaking,
it might be fun to cast, let's say... Bruce Willis as
Rick, and Sophie Marceau as Ilsa? What do you think?
Q - Of all the
movies you have seen, which are your favorites?
A -
My favorite movie list is always changing - always adding
stuff. If I had to limit this answer to my one-time favorite,
inspired-me-to-get-into-filmmaking movie, then I'd have
to say "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost
Ark".
Q - What question
are you just waiting to be asked?
A - What
question am I waiting to be asked? I want someone to come
up to me and ask: Can I invest in your film? Ha. If only
it was that easy. Well it is, but only if your last name
is Spielberg.
Q - Anything
else you want to say to our readers?
A - For
a parting comment: I'd like to thank everyone for reading
this interview and taking a moment to get to know me and
this project. It is my sincere hope that by making this
film, we can get Miami on the independent filmmaking map
for real and show people that there's a lot of talent
down here in Miami. I know that some indies have already
been made here, but we're going to be different: we're
going to surprise a lot of people. I'm pretty sure of
that. And when all is said and done, we'll hopefully be
in a good position to help other "up and coming"
locals get their shot as well.
