you are single, or if you are here with friends and looking
for a good time, here are some suggestions on what to
do while in town.
The
Scene
Dubbed by travel writers as "America's hottest destination,"
South Beach presents a rich and colorful mix of restaurants,
bars, clubs, hotels, and more. The place to see and be
seen. The spot where locals take their out-of-town relatives
for an experience that will leave them dazzled. In a stroll
down Ocean Drive on a Friday or Saturday night, one's
bound to see, parading down the outdoor cafes and restaurants
that crowd the sidewalks, shirtless bodybuilders with
abdominal muscles not unlike corrugated tin roofs; porcelain-skin
magazine models executing the "I'm so beautiful and
yet so aloof" strut; and European types with ponytails
strumming Flamenco riffs on their Spanish guitars.
Where
to go during the Day
The busiest area of South Beach spans from 5th Street to
about 15th Street. There are volleyball nets set up in between
the dunes and Ocean Drive and a concrete promenade that
runs parallel to Ocean Drive bustles with in-line skaters,
joggers and people walking and just milling about. The sand
is soft, the water aqua-blue, and the waves perfect for
a little body-surfing. Any of the outdoor cafes, such as
Mango's Tropical Cafe, or this part of the beach is a great
area to meet new people and make new friends.
Where
to go at Night
At night, South Beach is young, hip, and fun. You might
want to try Tantra, a restaurant/bar which is one of the
hottest spots. Drink and dance among the beautiful people.
Or else try Level where you can dance all night long.
If your feet start to ache, crawl down to the Eleventh
Street Diner. It's open 24 hours, and is busiest from
midnight-6 AM, so you won't have that cup a joe alone.
Hopefully, all that dancing will have worked up a mean
appetite, and if so, you're at the right place. All the
diner classics are on the menu, from meat loaf to lumpy
mashed potatoes, and smooth milkshakes.
