The authentic police car secured to the front of the building is sure to pique your curiosity. Among the 11,000 items on display are a jail cell, an electric chair and a 400-ton marble memorial that honors police officers killed in the line of duty. An impressive collection of old masters paintings, sculptures, textiles, period furniture, objets d'art and ecclesiastical artifacts. Call for special exhibits. The museum is closed for renovations and is scheduled to reopen in November 2001. Once it reopen, the projected hours and admission prices are as follows: Open Tues., Thurs.-Sat. 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Wed. 10 a.m.-9 p.m.; Sun. 11 a.m.-5 p.m.; closed Mon. Railroad enthusiasts will love the display of cars and memorabilia. On display is the presidential Pullman car, Ferdinand Magellan. A dramatic 42-foot bronze sculpture depicts the pain suffered during the Nazi Holocaust of WWII. Photographs and a list of the concentration camps and their victims are on display. Open daily 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Admission is free.

» Vizcaya Museum and Gardens

This Italian Renaissance-style villa, with more than 10 acres of formal gardens and fountains, sits gracefully on the edge of Biscayne Bay. Industrialist James Deering built the elaborate mansion in 1916 and decorated it with furnishings and art from the 15th through 19th centuries.
