Cheesecake Factory
7497 SW 88th Place, Miami
A bit commercialized, but the food is awesome. The portions
are huge, so you better come hungry. The place is not as cheap
as others in this section ($35-40 lunch for two) but due to
the size of the portions and the quality of the food, we had
to plug it in here. The cheesecakes are the BOMB, but they have
other selections for the rest of us. Check out the menu and
full review.
Le Sandwicherie
229 14th St., Miami Beach
Le Sandwicherie is for anyone with an appetite for custom,
made-to-order ham, turkey, tuna, or veggie sandwiches with or
without eight or so toppings served on freshly baked, crusty
French bread or
a croissant.
Doral Ale House
3271 NW 87th Ave, Miami
This casual sports bar chain is a great place to grab a burger,
a cold beer and catch the game. With a menu consisting of all
your favorite American fare, the food here is reasonably priced,
a perfect reason to order that sandwich to accompany your glass
of house wine. With more than 30 TVs, you can be assured that
you'll have a good seat for watching the game, no seat here
is a bad one. Look for daily drink specials, there's a happy
hour going on Monday through Friday. And from open until close
look for $5 pitchers of domestic beers or $2.50 Heineken or
Amstel Light pints.
The Big Cheese
8080 SW 67th Ave, Miami
The Big Cheese stands for good, cheap, huge portions of italian-american
cuisine. The place is a favorite among University of Miami students
(which is nearby) as well as for locals, looking for cheap and
large portions of italian-american cuisine.
You will find a huge selection of pizza, subs, pastas, and
salads, as well as buffalo wings and fried calamari. Pizzas
are loaded with fresh ingredients, including cheese from Wisconsin
and tomatoes
from California. Huge servings of pastas usually end up in take-out
containers after you've gorged on rolls swimming in garlic and
butter. Desserts, from cheesecake to Mississippi mud pie are
tasty.
Sports memorabilia, signed football helmets and pictures of
the The Rock, a frequent customer during his days as a UM football
player cover the walls. $20 and under based on a three-course
meal excluding tax and tip
Sergio's Cafeteria
3252 Coral Way, Miami
Where else are you going to go at 4:00 in the morning, especially
if you're stuck in the city? Sergio's is open 24 hours a day,
offering basic Cuban fare, especially sandwiches. Great cuban
food, and lots
of it. Sergio's is the real deal. Great prices and an easy,
relaxed atmosphere. But remember, you better be hungry...the
portions are huge, just like mama used to serve.
Pizza Rustica
863 Washington Ave., Miami Beach
Authentic slice of Northern Italy. Italians often scoff at the way the Americans have mangled their recipe for pizza. But at Pizza Rustica, even the Italians marvel at these thin-crusted gourmet meals
within a meal. This is the real deal, no thick, doughy, greasy concoctions here. If you want that, go to Pizza Hut. Instead, Pizza Rustica features several delicious, huge slices of gourmet, authentically Tuscan pizza.
Spinach and Gorgonzola cheese are in harmony with a bit of olive oil and garlic on a slate of the delicious, crispy dough. There's also four-cheese, arugula and rosemary potato, among others. If ever
there was a designer pizza, this is it.
San Loco
235 14th St., Miami Beach
The place to head for if you get the late night munchies on South Beach. Located across the street from one of Miami's favorite dives, Club Deuce, San Loco is a favorite of club kids, bar and restaurant
workers, budget tourists and many others. There are a few tables inside, but most people prefer to pick up their chow and take it out with them.
There's none of that Taco Bell mass production here, and quite honestly, it's not always fast food here. But it's worth the wait. The guacamole is very fresh and the tacos, burritos, enchiladas, and a
host of other Mexican munchies are zesty, not skimpy, and really cheap. Salsa is not watered down
and comes in mild, medium, serious and stupid.
Islands Cafe
9601 E. Bay Harbor Drive, Miami
Eclectic & International Restaurant. Nestled in the Bay Harbor Inn, Island's Cafe is home to the working classroom of nearby Johnson & Wales University. Chefs-to-be strut their stuff in the kitchen, while students training for hospitality careers run the front of the house. A charming terrace overlooking Indian Creek is the perfect spot for a casually elegant meal. The service may not be five star, but what they lack in grace they more than make up for with enthusiasm. To enjoy a meal here, you'll need a relaxed attitude and an unhurried schedule.
Appetizers such as Thai egg rolls or grilled vegetables are beautifully presented with a taste to match. The kitchen excels at both adventurous entrees like seafood risotto and classics such as filet mignon. The best part of the meal though, comes at the end. When the check arrives, you'll be surprised how much a little patience can pay off.
Macaluso's Restaurants
1747 Alton Road, Miami
Macaluso's home-style Italian cooking to satisfy both the body and the soul. There's more than just pizza and pasta on the menu, but both are so good it's hard to get beyond them. Pizzas range from an awesome clam to plain cheese and boast a golden crust that is mere crisp-chewy perfection. Pastas too run from hearty to sophisticated; try Grandma Lena's ricotta-filled ravioli in a garlicky broth with peas and fresh basil. For dessert, what else but a luscious tiramisu?
$21 to $30 based on a three-course meal excluding tax and tip
